There are plenty of designer watch manufacturers out there and we are familiar with most of the big names: Rolex, Tag Heuer, Citizen, the Beastie Boys…wait - what?

That’s right, legendary New York Rappers the Beastie Boys have hopped on the bandwagon with a watch designed by band member Mike D.

377a79cbfaorangeIt’s style is certainly not in the same vein as the watches we would usually feature here at Watch Superstar and it is certainly striking.  It reminds us of the mickey mouse or casio watches we used to wear at school.

The group designed the watch as a variation on the Nixon Timeteller P range of watches and comes in 4 bold colours: blue, green, white and orange.

Amongst all the media furore surrounding Tiger Woods and his many apparent ‘indiscretions’ it was a surprise to no-one when Tag Heuer jumped on the bandwagon of sponsors decided to drop the shamed golfer from their advertising campaigns.  Although they continued to back his charity foundation, Tag CEO Jean-Christophe Babin decided to “take account of the sensitivity of some consumers in relation to recent events”.

With all this fresh in our memory it was quite a surprise to see Tiger Woods featuring in a promotional video on Tag Heuer’s official site:

tigerOnce details of Woods’ alleged affairs emerged, the Watchmaker removed all photos from their site but it would appear that the line they are taking now is ‘forgive and forget’.  Will we start to see similar backing from Tiger’s other sponsors or are Tag Heuer taking a calculated risk?  Only time will tell.

990_oris_01Seeing as though Watch Superstar is currently running a deal on cheap oris watches, we thought we would give you a bit of background on these beautiful timepieces.

Based in Holstein, Switzerland, Oris was founded in 1904 by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian.  Their aim was to bring together Swiss horology tradition along with the watchmaker’s craft in order to make one precision timepiece.

Named after the stream and valley close to Holstein, Oris pride themselves on making purely mechanical watches.  All of their watches operate without batteries and are well equipped with very high quality automatic mechanial movements.

Like many other brands of designer watches, Oris has had it’s watches endorsed by several high profile names including Keanu Reeves and Matthew McConaughey.  Oris also have a history of sponsoring Formula 1 racing and it’s drivers.

These beautiful watches are extremely resilient and can withstand many types of conditions.  In case they need to be maintened, Oris have official service centres all over the world.  All watches are subject to wear and tear so Oris recommend that you service their watches every 3-5 years.

You may have seen this rather unfortunate advert for Citizen designer watches published in various magazines and newspapers.  For those of you who couldn’t care less about cricket, the joke is explained here.

These celebrities, eh?  They’re already rich so why they need to have their faces plastered all over posters advertising exclusive designer watches.  We’re just jealous…anyway here are a few more celebrity sellouts spokespersons for flash watches.

1)  Tiger Woods

tiger_woods_cjf2110ba0576When he isn’t busy endorsing every other product on the market, Tiger Woods lends his name to Tag Heur’s designer watches.  Interestingly, Tiger has brought out his own specialist golfers watch which we have helpfully reviewed for you!

2)  Charlize Theron

charlize_theron_raymond_weilModel and oscar winning actress Charlize Theron is an understandable choice to be the face of the beautiful Raymond Weil designer watches.  In the past she has also modelled for various Chrisian Dior products so we imagine she does well for the odd freebie.

3) Gisele

gisele_ebel2It’s difficult to make out where the watch is in this picture.  Either way, supermodel Gisele is apparently the face of Ebel’s designer watch range.

4)  Humphrey Bogart

humphrey_bogart_l26434516Undeterred by his death in 1957, Longines have dug up Humphrey Bogart to be the face of their Longines designer watch range.  At least this poster campaign seems to be quite respectful, without sinking to using a tacky quote such as “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful watch purchase”.

5)  Nico Rosberg

nico_rosberg_orisF1 recing drivers are no strangers to endorsment, as the logos plastering their overalls will testify to.  Along with the many other brands seen here, Nico Rosberg is a supporter of Oris designer watches.

There was a lot of attention surrounding the release of the Tag Heuer Golf watch, due in no small part to the involvement of Tiger Wood’s in both it’s development and launch.  Conventional golfing wisdom states that you should remove your watch when playing a serious match as it can seriously interfere with your swing in different ways.  It was with this in mind that Tag Heuer and Tiger Woods set out to change all that by designing a professional golf watch that works with golfers rather than against them. • A is for ARNOLD, JOHN - English Watchmaker (Born 1736, died 1799).  John Arnold and his rival, Thomas Earnshaw were the first to produce chronometers in significant quantities.  Arnold set up a small factory in Essex in 1788 where he was the first to produce a pocket chronometer.  He turned his attention to more accurate timepieces, eventually inventing one of such quality that Captain James Cook used it on his south sea voyages!

Theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein would never have formulated his theory of relativity without of course being able to tell the time.  So what sort of watch do you think he had?  Something as novel as this, perhaps?

not_einstein_watchUnfortunately not - Herr Einstein managed to keep his ego under control.   It turns out that he was more of a Longines man.  We have managed to dig out a photo where he is pictured with his wrist watch, which he was apparently presented with in 1931:

You can only just make it out in this photo, however his Longines watch was recently auctioned where it managed to fetch 2000% of it’s estimated price.  Here you can see it in all it’s glory - it is inscribed with ‘prof Albert Einstein’:
